Malham Tarn from Nappa Cross  -  Yorkshire Dales
A more contemporary treatment of this subject sees Malham Tarn from a distance nestling in its hollow. Malham Tarn is one of only two natural lakes in the Yorkshire Dales, the other being Semerwater. The original painting was done on three separate canvases.

Seven Trees

These trees are in the middle of a field near where I live. Curiously they form a straight line and probably were part of an old field boundary. I first sketched them in 1990, some years later making a small etching-- from the etching I made this painting. So the picture has evolved, the sky becoming progressively more dramatic. There is a folk tale quoted by some, of seven Pendle witches being cursed and turned into trees, but there are similar claims from other places around Pendle Hill.

Three Peaks  -   Yorkshire Dales

The Three Peaks comprising (from the top and in order of height) Whernside, Ingleborough and Penyghent are perhaps the best known mountains in the Yorkshire Dales. In this painting (or three paintings) Whernside is shown from Black Shiver Moss, Ingleborough from White Scars and Penyghent from Norber.

Sunset Over Coniston Water - Lake District
The sun is setting behind the Coniston Fells, with Dow Crag and The Old Man of Coniston quite prominent. This lakeland scene was painted from the eastern shore of Coniston Water.

Calm Evening Grasmere  -  Lake District

On Blea Rigg, Dusk Over the Langdale Pikes  -  Lake District

Most of my pictures are painted with oil paint, but here I used watercolour, painting swiftly without even any drawing. As the darkness descended it became increasingly difficult to see. The walk back to Grasmere was dodgy to say the least.

Wastwatwer Screes  -  Lake District

I sometimes like to use a broader technique in my paintings, as I did here to capture the ruggedness of this subject; mixing sand in the paint to give texture and to represent the boulders on the lower slopes. This is the deepest lake in England and is often a dark rich colour. There is always an indescribable atmosphere here, whatever the weather.

Under Cracked Ice the Flowerstones Bloom

Walking through fields during winter, Sam noticed the interesting patterns under the cracked ice of the frozen path and duly photographed them. I later re-worked his digital image to make this print.  Blue represents ice and the white swirls the cracks and bubbles, grass can be made out, and stones
almost look like flowers.
