The English Lake District, also known as Lakeland or simply The Lakes is an area of breathtaking scenery containing many mountains (fells), spectacular valleys and lots of lakes (although only Bassenthwaite Lake is traditionally named lake, the others being named mere, water or for the smaller ones tarn.
Across Derwentwater to Cat Bells, Lake District
Looking towards Cat Bells from near Friar''s Crag, the idea of this Lakeland painting was to play the blues against the yellow and golden autumn tints. Cat Bells (or Catbells) is a shapely little fell and not too demanding, it is often walked by families with young children. Derwentwater is thought to be the loveliest of lakes and is sometimes referred to as the Queen of the Lakes.

Great Langdale, Lake District
Great Langdale is a very popular valley in Lakeland. This autumnal painting, which was one of my first of Lakeland, was executed with a very limited palette; a mixture of just four colours. The viewpoint is from near Chapel Stile, looking up the valley to the distinctive mountains of Pavey Ark, Harrison Stickle and Pike o' Stickle (or is it Loft Crag), with the mass of Lingmoor on the left.

Grasmere from Dale End, Lake District
Set in the very heart of Lakeland and surrounded by impressive fells, Grasmere is perhaps Lakeland's most picturesque lake. This picture was painted from above the west shore and looks towards the island and the distinctive Helm Crag (left of the island) and in the distance the mountain pass of Dunmail Raise. Dove Cottage, now a museum, is on the edge of the village of Grasmere where William Wordsworth wrote some of his finest poems.

Buttermere from Dalegarth, Lake District
I had made many trips to Buttermere in the Lake District over the years without finding what I thought was a good composition. However on this occasion I couldn't believe my luck. The boat was actually there, and with Haystacks (one of Wainwright's favourite fells) reflected in the still water and the whole framed by the fresh spring leaves - I knew this Lakeland scene was it.
Although Buttermere is one of the smallest lakes in Lakeland, it is perhaps the most dramatic.

Lingmoor''s heather covered summit is an excellent vantage point to see many other notable Lake District fells, including not only the Langdale Pikes, but Bowfell, Crinkle Crags and the Coniston Fells., with many others in the distance. Lingmoor Tarn is a short distance from the summit too, which is well worth a visit.

River Derwent, Grange in Borrowdale, Lake District
Many paintings have been produced over the years of this classic subject at the pretty hamlet of Grange-in-Borrowdale, it is one of the best loved Lakeland scenes; especially attractive in spring before the bracken looses its warm russet hues and the trees are not so leafy. I've shown only one arch of the double arched bridge over the River Derwent, which I think makes a better composition.

Summit view from Coniston Old Man, Lake District
The view east over the tarns of Low Water, Levers Water and Coppermines Valley is quite spectacular, especially on a breezy clear day when cloud shadows scud over the fells.
