Before Sunset, Black Moss and Pendle Hill - Lancashire.

On frequent visits here, I noted the position of the sun in relation to Pendle Hill as the seasons progressed, ultimately settling for this composition. This is a good place to watch wildlife, as there is always something of interest on the water, In this picture I have painted a group of Canada geese.

Ribble Valley and Pendle Hill - Lancashire

The Ribble Valley, which is situated to the west of Pendle Hill, is of a gentler nature to that of the east. The weather is often better too, which is maybe why some people refer to it as the 'soft side'. Painted from near Grindleton the River Ribble runs all through the painting from left to right but is hidden by trees and banking.

Heys Lane, Summer  -  Pendle Hill

Painting Pendle Hill in the early 1970's I tried to ensure that I chose viewpoints that had not appeared on calendars or postcards or had been painted by other artists. I had to find views of my own. This entailed much research, walking and studying maps. On discovering this view I couldn't believe it had not been previously used. I felt like Carter entering Tutankhamen's tomb. I've since found countless other good viewpoints of Pendle Hill but this remains a firm favourite.

Pendle in May - Lancashire

I've made many paintings of Pendle Hill from this lane but this was the first. Someone once said that this lane must be my golden mile as the paintings always sold. In fact this picture was sold when still wet on the easel. The view is from Heys Lane looking down onto the village of Barley. The Pendle Inn is quite visible in this picture but since the trees have grown it is now hidden.

Pendle Hill from Pasture Lane - Lancashire

Painted in 1974, this picture was a turning point for me as previously I had always used a much broader technique. I tried in this picture to capture the silver-grey tones of an overcast day, which I think can be very beautiful.

Seven Trees

These trees are in the middle of a field near where I live. Curiously they form a straight line and probably were part of an old field boundary. I first sketched them in 1990, some years later making a small etching-- from the etching I made this painting. So the picture has evolved, the sky becoming progressively more dramatic.
     There is a folk tale quoted by some, of seven Pendle witches being cursed and turned into trees, but there are similar claims from other places around Pendle Hill.

Newchurch in Pendle, Winter

Newchurch, famous for its connection with the Pendle Witches, is located in rather an elevated position and therefore is usually one of the first villages to receive snow. The church tower, which predates the 'new' 17th century  church, has the curious 'Eye of God' built into its west side, apparently to ward off evil spirits.

Late Summer, Pendle Hill - Lancashire

A hazy late summer's afternoon just above Pendle Water, in an area of Roughlee called 'Happy Valley' by many locals.  Most of my larger pictures are painted with oil paint, but for this, gouache was used, which is excellent for rendering fine detail.

Pendle Hill from Cob Lane - Lancashire

Cob Lane winds its way up the hillside from Kelbrook towards the old Skipton road. The field was a waving sea of wildflowers and I think must have been a 'set aside field'. Blacko Tower can be seen in the distance dwarfed by Pendle Hill. Part of this edition was used for the Kelbrook School Centenary 1896 -1996, for which I added a small ink drawing of the school on some of the prints as a kind of 'remarque'.

Spring Wood - Lancashire

The subject of this painting could be almost any English bluebell wood, but it happens to be part of the ancient Spring Wood near Whalley in Lancashire. The beautiful countryside of Lancashire is very well endowed with such woodlands.

Towards Pendle Hill - Lancashire

Sometimes I am asked where this picture was painted from. Well in actual fact I can't say because it is a combination of two views. The Lane near Rimington is turned around to face Pendle Hill and Pendle Hill itself is from a couple of miles to the west. I don't make a habit of moving mountains!

Copy Clough is within the grounds of Towneley Hall, Burnley. There are many kinds of trees here, but I particularly like the sycamore, its star shaped leaves seem to float on the air.

Orange Tips
