These still life paintings have been painted directly from life, mainly using the 'alla prima' technique (a 'one hit' method of painting wet into wet in one session), though some were painted in two sessions and the Peonies which was a complicated subject, in about five. All are available as fine art giclée prints.
Still Life with Three Lemons and Wetheriggs Pottery Cup
I played the yellow of the lemons against the deep ultramarine blue background, and offset them with the little decorated cup.

Still Life with Satsumas and Lead Glazed Jug
For thousands of years pottery was predominately glazed with lead, which gave a beautiful lustre-like sheen, but sometime last century it was deemed harmful and couldn't be used on domestic ware. I enjoyed painting the reflections, which altered much as I slightly changed my position. You can make out my distorted portrait in the pot.

Still Life with Peonies in a Glass Jar
I cut four peonies from the garden and set them in a large glass jar. It was rather a complicated subject and quite challenging over the week I was painting. The flowers changed position naturally as they moved towards the light, the petals opened wider and even slightly changed their colour. The stalks also seemed to alter their position in the jar. It was a race against time to complete the painting before the petals started to drop.

Two Apples and Slipware Jug - Still Life
The potter Ray Finch took over the Winchcombe Country Pottery in Gloucestershire from Michael Cardew in 1937, producing a range of simple yet beautiful functional ware. The jug here turned up in Nelson market, Lancashire, some years ago (about 1979),. I think I paid 20 pence for it. It sat on the windowsill in our house for years until the cat knocked it off and broke it (in 2003). I stored the pieces in a box and have recently glued them together for this painting.
